Advice needed: Localizing a big online store for different countries

I’m working on a big online store project and we’re stuck. We’ve got the site in different languages already, but now we need to make it work for different countries that speak the same language. Like, we want different stuff for US and UK customers, even though they both use English.

The tricky part is, we’re building the US version on a whole different system. I know, it’s not ideal, but that’s what we’re dealing with. My worry is that these two systems won’t play nice when it comes to telling Google about all our different versions.

I’m thinking maybe we should ditch the usual way of doing things and just use sitemaps to tell Google what’s what. But I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.

So, I’ve got a few questions:

  1. How well does the sitemap thing work compared to the usual way?
  2. Is there a better way to do this?
  3. Am I missing something important?
