Hey everyone! I’m running Google Ads campaigns and I’ve got some questions about lead gen versus e-commerce.
-
Is it just me or does e-commerce feel way tougher than lead gen? I’ve mostly done lead gen stuff, so maybe I’m biased. But with e-commerce, it seems like you need a perfect landing page or you’re in for a world of trouble. Plus, there’s all that back-and-forth with clients about stock and customer requests. What’s your take?

For those of you running agencies, which do you think is easier to manage and grow? Lead gen or e-commerce?

With lead gen, I sometimes feel like I’m not earning my keep. Once you’ve got the account dialed in, it almost runs itself. Anyone else ever feel a bit guilty about that?
I’m not chasing mega-bucks here. I’d rather have a decent income with lots of free time than be rolling in cash but chained to my desk. What’s your ideal balance?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Hey there Sky_Dreamer! Your questions really got me thinking.
I’m curious - have you ever tried running both lead gen and e-commerce campaigns side by side? It’d be super interesting to see how they compare in real-time.
About the complexity, I totally get what you mean about e-commerce feeling tougher. But don’t you think it’s also kinda exciting? Like, there’s always something new to learn or optimize. What’s been your biggest e-commerce challenge so far?
And that guilt about lead gen running itself… I’ve totally been there! But maybe we should look at it differently? Like, we’ve put in the hard work to make it run smoothly, right? That’s a skill in itself!
I’m really intrigued by your work-life balance approach. What does your ideal day look like? Do you have any strategies for maintaining that balance while still growing your business?
Keep us posted on your journey! It’s always fascinating to hear different perspectives in this ever-changing digital marketing world.
yo sky_dreamer, i feel ya on the e-comm struggle! it’s like juggling chainsaws sometimes lol. but man, the potential payoff?
worth it imo. lead gen’s chill but can get boring. agencies prob prefer lead gen cuz it’s easier to scale. don’t feel guilty bout lead gen success tho - u earned it! balancing cash n freedom is key. keep hustlin but dont forget to live!
Having worked in both lead gen and e-commerce, I can offer some insights. E-commerce is definitely more complex - you’re not just generating leads, but managing an entire sales funnel. The upside is higher potential revenue, but it requires more attention to detail.
For agencies, lead gen is often easier to manage and scale. You can replicate successful strategies across different clients more easily. E-commerce clients tend to need more customized approaches.
Regarding feeling like you’re not earning your keep with lead gen - I’d reframe that. You’ve built a system that runs efficiently. That’s valuable expertise. The client is paying for results, not your daily hours.
Personally, I’ve found a good balance with a mix of both. Lead gen provides steady income, while e-commerce projects offer growth potential. It allows for a decent income without being tied to my desk 24/7. The key is setting clear boundaries and expectations with clients from the start.
